What Does The Bible Say About Women Wearing Trousers, Jewelry and Makeup, Is It A Sin?

WEARING OF TROUSERS SIN OR NOT?

Let me start this very article by answering the question above.  

It is not a sin for a woman to wear trousers! It is not a sin for a woman to apply make-up on her face, and neither is it a sin for a woman to wear earrings and jeweleries. Some persons think it’s a sin because they probably read a verse of scripture on that, and because of a lack of proper bible study, they just assume that the very verse they are looking at or read is saying it’s a sin for a Woman to wear trousers and do the above mentioned earlier.

This misconception comes from a very well-known bible verse which is Deuteronomy 22:5 and it reads below. 

The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God. 

Deuteronomy 22:5 KJV

From the above verse, the Greek word used for the word “Pertaineth” there is the word “kelîy”

And “kelîy” is translated correctly in English to mean an item that belongs to another.

The above verse is saying: A clothing that belongs to a specific man and that is owned by a man, a woman should not put it on. Same likewise, A clothing that is owned by a specific woman, a man should not carry it and put it on.

That verse is not trying to say a woman shouldn’t go and wear men’s attire or a man should go and wear women’s attire, but rather, if that man’s attire is already owned by a man who has already worn such attire, a woman shouldn’t carry it and put it on. So, likewise, the man. Do you get this now?

This instruction was given to those under the Law covenant of Moses, and as we study further, we will see why it was given.

Let’s see why from the following scriptures below.

Cleansing Unhealthiness

The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 

“Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘When any man has a bodily discharge, his discharge is unclean. 

This shall be [the law concerning] his uncleanness in his discharge: whether his body allows its discharge to flow or obstructs its flow; it is uncleanness in him. 

Every bed on which the one who has the discharge lies becomes unclean, and everything on which he sits becomes unclean. 

Whoever touches his bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening; 

and whoever sits on anything on which the man with the discharge has been sitting shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 

Also whoever touches the man with the discharge shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 

And if he who has the discharge spits on one who is clean, then he shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 

Any saddle on which the man with the discharge rides becomes unclean. 

Whoever touches anything that has been under him shall be unclean until evening; and whoever carries those things shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

Leviticus 15: 1-10 AMP

SO WE SEE from the above verse concerning the MAN that it speaks about a discharge that comes out from them that makes what they put on ritually unclean.

Let’s read further to find out what this discharge is all about.

Cleansing Unhealthiness

‘Now if any man has a seminal emission, he shall wash all his body in water, and be unclean until evening. 

Every garment and every leather on which there is semen shall be washed with water, and shall be unclean until evening.

Leviticus 15: 16-17 AMP

So, we see that a man will always have a discharge from his part; this discharge may be in the form of semen or sperm. Once such discharge touches anything, that thing the discharge touches becomes unclean.

So, the man’s clothing becomes unclean by his discharge.  

So imagine if a woman goes and wears the clothing of this very man whose discharge has touched it. She becomes unclean as well, according to the law, by reason of wearing that man’s clothing. Hope you get this now.

So also it applies to a man wearing the clothings of a woman whose discharge has touched it. Let’s see this below.

Cleansing Unhealthiness

‘When a woman has a discharge, if her bodily discharge is blood, she shall continue in her menstrual impurity for seven days; and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening. 

Everything on which she lies during her menstrual impurity shall be unclean; and everything on which she sits shall be unclean. 

Anyone who touches her bed shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 

Whoever touches anything on which she sits shall wash his clothes and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 

And if it is on her bed or on the thing on which she is sitting, when he touches it, he shall be unclean until evening. 

Leviticus 15: 19-23 AMP

SO YOU SEE, THE ABOVE VERSES ONLY SPEAK ABOUT A DISCHARGE THAT MAKES A MAN OR A WOMAN CLOTHING’S UNCLEAN. So, going to wear clothes that have been stained by someone’s discharge makes you unclean as well, according to the law.

It’s not saying if you go and wear clothing that somehow looks like a guy’s clothing, if you are a lady, it is a sin. Rather, it’s saying if that clothing is owned by another person, then it’s not good to wear it because of bodily discharge that might have touched it, and this law only applies in the Moses era, not now in our dispensation.

In fact, in The Jewish land, All the men wore skirts. Goliath was on skirt as well as David and all the armies of Israel when they came face to face in battle. 

Some Israelites wore long garments, the same with women as well.  

The Bible never gave any difference between a man’s clothing and a woman’s clothing.

Clothing is cloth. Whichever style it was, it’s a cultural thing.

It is our culture and that of certain races or nations that began to categorize clothing into female clothes and male clothes.

But in biblical days, men’s clothing and women’s clothing were similar to each other, if not the same. They never gave any difference between male clothes and female clothes. I hope you get this now.

So you see someone coming out to preach that wearing trousers for a lady is a sin is actually preaching or saying error out of ignorance because how can they know and teach that trousers are for the men because in bible days the men wore skirts? 

Trousers can be for both men and women, and there is nothing wrong if a man or a woman wears trousers.

So, in conclusion, a verse of scripture in the Bible that is not properly studied will lead a lot to error. Proper bible interpretation is key to eradicating ignorance.

Condemning a woman simply because she wears trousers is wrong.

Condemning a church simply because the ladies who attend such churches wear trousers is totally wrong. Know this today! So that you will free your mind from such judgemental mindset you have about people because of a lack of understanding of a verse of scripture
