Scholarship Description

Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarships allows U.S. undergraduates with limited financial resources to study abroad or intern in other countries, thereby gaining skills that are critical for the national security of the United States and its economic prosperity. The students will learn to speak and understand different languages and cultures; this is crucial for their academic and professional development. The program encourages students to intern and study in diverse countries and regions; the program encourages students to learn languages, including critical need languages.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Details

Scholarship amounts range between US$100 and US$5000; there is also the option to receive a Critical Need Language Award up to US$8000. The scholarship recipients are selected through a competitive process. They must use their award to pay for eligible costs of study or internship abroad. The costs of these expenses include tuition, room, board, textbooks, local transportation and insurance, international airfare and visa fees, as well as the cost of books; the final award amount for a Gilman Scholar will be determined based on financial need, the length of the program, the overall costs, and the strength in the application.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Eligibility

Gilman Scholarship recipients are only eligible to receive the scholarship one time. Students who previously declined the Gilman scholarship are welcome to apply again, provided they meet all of the eligibility requirements.

  • A citizen of the United States
  • A student enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year accredited college in the United States.
  • Becoming eligible for a Federal Pell Grant at the time of the application or providing proof that the Pell Grant will be received during their internship or study abroad;
  • You are in the process of applying or being accepted into a study abroad program or internship that offers credit. Prior to the award disbursement, proof of acceptance into the program is required.
  • Applying to credit-bearing programs abroad in a country with a Travel Advisory level 1 or 2 according to the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory System. Students will not be permitted to travel to certain locations in these countries and areas that are designated as “Do not travel” (Level 4). Students are also not allowed to apply for a program in a region or country with a Level 3 or 4.

The U.S. Department of State has the right to change the program for a specific country or location if it is deemed necessary at any stage of the selection process or during the program. The final awards are dependent on the availability of funds as well as the security and health situation in the country or location. A Gilman Scholar’s status can also be affected if the security or health situation changes in a particular country.

Application Instructions

Students can intern and study abroad during the spring, summer, or fall term.

The application for the October Deadline will be open from mid-August to applicants who have in-person internships or programs that begin between 1 December and 31 October 2024. This cycle includes Winter or January 2024 programs, Spring 2024 programs, Maymester 2024, Summer 2024 programs, Fall 2024, and Academic Year 2024/2025.
